Of Fish and Men

10.29.22

I woke, by my alarm, to some forgetful dreams. I turned it off and allowed myself to doze again. If was a very quick 'nap' though likely less than 10 minutes, but this dream came through extremely vivid.

I found myself sitting in the front row of an audience at what seemed like a meeting. I was mostly to myself with one person on each side of me, but my back was still to everyone else. I could sense there was quite a crowd though. Two men went to the front of the crowd with baskets in their arms. They set the baskets down and one of the men proceeded to pull out the fish and place them in the other man's arms, as if preparing for him to carry as many as he could at one time. He keep pulling out fish after fish to where the man holding them had his arms so full he appeared like two legs holding up a huge pile of fish. The scales on the fish kept flashing hints of gold and silver, almost making them appears as polished metal armor. There was way more fish in his arms than what the baskets they carried up there could have possibly held. There was so many fish they began to fall to the ground and create a pile there as well. After a bit, the man holding the fish was instructed to hand out the fish to everyone and the second man grabbed the second basket and made his rounds handing out fish as well.

As I watched this obviously astounding fish pile growing scene, I remember thinking to myself that I didn't really need or want any of the fish...that it was really for everyone else anyway...and I wanted to make sure though that everyone there got all of the fish they wanted. SO, I decided to lay my head down and pretend to nap. As I felt one of the men handing out fish come near my small group, I remember thinking that I did have cats at home, and they could use the fish. I then decided to just open my right hand, palm up, still keeping my head down and eyes closed...just in case they wanted to place one of the fish in my hand. The man walked by and I didn't place anything in my hand. I peeked over to the person to my right and saw him take a fish from the man and felt satisfied still that he got what he needed. I laid with my head down for a little while longer, just sensing what everyone was doing. It felt as if they were eating and conversing with each other and the people next to me were not wanting to disturb my attempt to rest.

After a bit I sat up and saw a fish the man had set aside for me, laying on a reddish blanket next to my head. It was a small but very picture perfect, fat and meaty specimen of a cooked silver Tilapia. I looked over to what the man on the right of me had. He was given a cooked silver Herring that was at least twice as large as my little fish. I reached out and touched the belly of my fish in thanks and blessing. I then did the same to the man's fish. He nodded his head in gratitude. I was amused to find that even though his fish looked so much larger than the one they gave me, I could tell by touching it that it was much bonier and had a lot less usable meat on it. For some reason I felt no impulse to even look to the person I felt to left of me. I pondered the two fish and what just happened in my dream for a bit before waking up.
